Blog #2: Friends of Charli D'Amelio

This week, we are talking about Chase Hudson (Lil Huddy) and Dixie D’Amelio. These two public figures have one major thing in common. This is their association with Charli D’Amelio. To start, how does Charli have such a large influence on our generation?

Charli D’Amelio

Charli D’Amelio (18) currently has 147.3 million followers on TikTok. Joining the app in 2019, she quickly became the platform’s most successful creator, only recently being passed as the “TikToker” with the most followers. Although comedian Khaby Lame now holds that spot, Charli remains the most influential social media star of our generation. Her sponsorships, reality show, content, and clothing and cosmetics companies have made her net worth approximately $20 million. Her fame was kickstarted by her dances and choreography on TikTok, and participation in the early days of

Dixie D’Amelio

Along with Charli, creating content in the Hype House, was her older sister, Dixie (21). After capitalizing on her sister’s sudden fame in 2019, Dixie now has 57.5 million followers on TikTok. Making money in similar ways to her sister, her net worth is $10 million. Dixie follows her younger sister, being 2022’s two highest-paid TikTok creators. Whereas Charli remains focused on dance through her platforms and newest gig on Dancing with the Stars, Dixie has shifted her focus to music.

In 2020, Dixie released her first single, “Be Happy,” which found immediate success. After a few more singles, she finally released her debut album, a letter to me, in June of 2022. Dixie has always had a passion for music, but she started on a different path.

“TikTok has not only changed my career, it has changed everything... In terms of how it has changed my career, it essentially created my career.”

- Dixie D’Amelio

Chase Hudson (Lil Huddy)

TikTok has also proven to change Chase Hudson’s life. As a co-founder of the Hype House, he quickly found fame under the handle, “Lil Huddy.” At this time, in 2020, he started dating Charli. As a couple, they took over the internet. However, as seen with many public relationships, drama followed. Rumors that Huddy had cheated on Charli, causing a public feud, involving many of their friends.

They later reconciled and worked together on projects including social media content and one of Huddy’s music videos. Their friendship is featured in the D’Amelio family’s reality show on Hulu, The D’Amelio Show.

Today, dropping the “Lil” from his name, Huddy (20) has 32.2 million followers on TikTok and has split ways with the Hype House to focus solely on his music career. His first single, “21st Century Vampire,” was based on his public persona and image. He then released a breakup song, “America’s Sweetheart,” with a music video heavily featuring Charli D’Amelio as a solo dancer.

In September, 2021, he established himself as a punk rock musician with his debut album, Teenage Heartbreak. However, his relationship with Charli has recently been a topic of conversation after she went public with her new boyfriend, Landon Barker (son of Travis Barker). This news sparked the release of Huddy’s newest single, “All the Things I Hate About You,” where he calls Charli, “a showstopper, a bad liar, homie hopper, drama starter.” The song immediately went viral after it was teased and now has 83.3K videos made to the song on TikTok.

Artist or Influencer?

This leads to the question about if either Dixie or Huddy are considered artists. Both started by gaining fame and influence as TikTok creators. Their videos include lip syncing to popular sounds and keeping up with all of the latest dances and trends.

However, they now each have a released album and are in the studio working on new music. Dixie just toured as an opening act for Big Time Rush and Huddy is currently on tour with his own music as well. Both still active on social media, they have claimed that their focus is on their music.

Is that enough to shake their title as an “influencer,” “TikToker,” or “social media star?”

New Development

In the trailer for season two of The D’Amelio Show, Charli revealed that she is interested in pursuing a music career, like Dixie. The trailer poses a concern about telling Dixie because music has been “her thing.” If Charli decides to release music, how will she be perceived? Will she have an easier or more difficult time being seen as a serious artist than her sister? Why?
